Lenten Bible Study on Zoom starts February 22

In our Lenten Bible study entitled, Savior: What the Bible Says About the Cross, Rev. Dr. Magrey deVega describes the need for reconciliation between humankind and a holy God through Jesus’ death on the cross. By exploring the mystery of salvation through the cross, we can deepen our love for God and others and strengthen our commitment to follow Jesus.

This class will meet on Zoom on Mondays, February 22 - March 29 at 10:30 am. You may register by filling out the form below by Friday, February 12. You may order the book on Amazon or through The Chapel. If you order the book through The Chapel, payment of $16.99 is due by February 12.

CDC: Coping with Stress

FROM CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL: Stress and Coping During Coronavirus/COVID-19

Older people are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 which may result in increased
stress during a crisis.  Fear and anxiety about the COVID-19 pandemic can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions.

Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can include

  • Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones

  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns

  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating

  • Worsening of chronic health problems

  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs

Things you can do to support yourself

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories and social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.

  • Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs.

  • Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.

  • Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.

    Call your healthcare provider if stress gets in the way of your daily activities for several days in a row.  Also, people with preexisting mental health conditions should continue with their treatment
    and be aware of new or worsening symptoms.

Lenten Prayer on Zoom starts February 24

The Consciousness Examen: Prayerfully Reflecting on Your Day with God will be held on Zoom on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm beginning February 24 and ending on March 24. Bertie Knisely will facilitate this Lenten Prayer series intended to develop awareness of God’s presence and action in all of life.

The group will read selected readings from the book, Sleeping with Bread: Holding What Gives You Life by Dennis, Sheila, and Matthew Linn. You may register by completing the form below by February 17. The book is available on Amazon or you may order it through The Chapel for $13.45. Payment is due by February 17 if you want The Chapel to order the book.

LIVING WELL WEBINAR: "How to Protect Yourself Against Financial Fraud and Scams," Wednesday, March 17, 10:30-11:45 a.m., presented by Sydney Palinkas, ElderSAFE Center community educator, Charles E. Smith Life Communities. Con artists are everywhere, so the more educated you are about financial fraud and scams, the better equipped you’ll be to avoid becoming a victim. Learn about the most common telephone, computer, in-person and COVID-19 scams; how to keep from taking the bait; and where to report fraud/scams. Free. Register by March 15 to receive a Zoom link.

Would you like to order Easter flowers in honor of or in memory of a loved one?  Orders and payment are due no later than April 1.  Supplies are limited, please order early.  Your dedication will be listed in the Easter Sunday bulletin and you may take your plant home after the 11:00 am service on April 12.

Heart Health: Saturday, February 1 at 10:00 am

We invite you to a healthy brunch followed by a workshop on heart health with renowned cardiologist Dr. Patricia Davidson from the Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Davidson will discuss heart disease in older adults and how lifestyle choices and regular wellness screenings can reduce risk.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Plan on joining us to learn what you can do to make 2020 a healthy year. Seating is limited. RSVP by submitting the form below no later than Sunday, January 26.

Film Festival in January

In January, we will examine three vintage films from the 1960’s which show us interesting intersections between what we say, how we act and what we do. All films will be shown at 1:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. No tickets or reservations are needed.

Monday, January 6: The Miracle Worker Running Time 106 minutes

The movie tells the story of Annie Sullivan’s struggles to teach Helen Keller how to interact with her world. This film won five Oscars, including Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Monday, January 13: Lilies of the Field Running Time 94 minutes

Sidney Poitier won an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance as Homer Smith, an itinerant handyman who builds a chapel for five impoverished nuns in the Arizona desert.

Monday, January 27: Elmer Gantry Running Time 146 minutes

Burt Lancaster stars in the title role as a fast-talking traveling salesman turned evangelist. The film casts a slightly tarnished light on traveling ministries and analyzes the nature of faith and redemption.

Visit the Holocaust Museum: January 15

The winter season is a perfect time to visit Washington DC’s world-renowned museums. While the weather is likely to be chilly, the crowds are much lighter and timed-entry tickets are not required during the weekdays. The Inter-Faith Fellowship plans a trip to the Holocaust Museum on Wednesday, January 15. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is America’s national institution for the documentation, study and interpretation of Holocaust history and serves as this country’s memorial to the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust.

The group will gather at The Chapel at 9:00 am on Wednesday, January 15 to carpool to the Glenmont Metro station and will travel via Metro to the museum. Admission to the museum is free and does not require a ticket. Each person must have a SmarTrip card to use Metro and should bring money for lunch. This trip will require extensive walking from the Metro to the museum and standing to visit the exhibits.

National Museum of African American History & Culture: Wednesday, February 19

Join the Inter-Faith Fellowship on a trip to the museum. The group will gather at The Chapel at 9:00 am on Wednesday, February 19 to carpool to the Glenmont Metro. Admission to the museum is free and does not require a ticket. Each person must have a SmarTrip card to use the Metro and should bring money for lunch. This trip requires extensive walking and standing.

Order Christmas Poinsettias: order now, just a few left

You may remember a loved one or honor someone special by ordering a beautiful red poinsettia in his/her name. The December 24 bulletin will include your dedication. Each plant is available for $10.00. You may take your plant home after the 6 pm service on Tuesday, December 24 or pick it up on December 27. You may pay by going to the Giving tab above and designating poinsettia when you enter information. You may also mail a check to the Chapel.

Stress Reduction: Monday, November 18

Terry Ullman, MSW, LCSW-C, LICSW, will present a stress reduction program on Monday, November 18 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am.  Register in advance by submitting the form below by November 13.

Stress is a protective response by our body to help us to respond to danger.  Under normal circumstances, stress gives us the energy and focus we need to meet our challenges.  However, if we experience too much stress, it can take a toll on our physical and emotional health.  In this presentation, participants will learn simple ways to manage and reduce the stress in their lives.

Ms. Ullman is a clinical social worker with more than 30 years of experience working with older adults and their families.

Apple Picking : Thursday, October 17

The Inter-Faith Fellowship invites you to come apple picking! The group will meet in The Chapel parking lot at 9:30 am on Thursday, October 17 to carpool to Larriland Farms, about 45 minutes away. At the farm, you may pick your own apples or purchase fresh apples, pumpkins and other fall treats in the farm market. Afterwards, the group will go out to lunch.

RSVP by completing the form below by Thursday, October 10. Transportation will be by carpool, and volunteer drivers are needed. No advance payment is necessary, bring money for your purchases and lunch. The trip will require walking over uneven ground.

Day Trip to Annapolis: Tuesday, September 17

The Inter-Faith Fellowship invites you on a day trip to Annapolis on Tuesday, September 17. The group will gather at The Chapel at 8:15 am to carpool. The day will start with a guided tour of the State House, followed by lunch. Then the group will enjoy a 40 minute boat tour of the harbor and Naval Academy.

Payment of $17 per person for the boat trip and your RSVP are due by Monday, September 9, Volunteer car pool drivers are needed and extensive walking is required. You may pay online from the home page by clicking on the Giving tab or you may drop off your payment in The Chapel office.

Visit Mt. Vernon at Christmas: Thursday, December 5

All are invited to join the Inter-Faith Fellowship on a day trip to visit Mt. Vernon on Thursday, December 5 to see the historic mansion decorated for the season and preserved to 1799, the last year of George Washington’s life. Costumed interpreters will give 18th century demonstrations and tell stories of Christmas past.

The visit includes the outbuildings where over 50 enslaved men and women worked and the Museum and Education Center with 23 galleries and theatres to learn more about Washington’s life and Mt. Vernon’s enslaved community.

The group will meet at the Chapel parking lot at 9 am to carpool to Mt. Vernon. Drivers will be needed to make this trip possible. Your RSVP and payment of $20 per person admission are due no later than Monday, December 2. You may pay by clicking on the Giving tab above and designating Mt. Vernon when you enter information or you may mail a check to the Chapel. Bring money for lunch, as the group will be dining at the Mount Vernon Inn.

Civil War History Day Trip: Wednesday, November 13

All are invited to join the Inter-Faith Fellowship on a day trip to Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick County and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in downtown Frederick.  The group will meet at The Chapel on Wednesday, November 13 at 9:30 am to carpool.  There is a $8.00 charge per person for admission to the museum.  RSVP by submitting the form below and paying by November 7.

The first stop, Monocacy National Battlefield, was the site of battle on July 9, 1864.  While not a large or particularly well-known battle, it had an impact much larger than many know.  The Confederates were victorious on the battlefield but were delayed on their assault on Washington, DC.  By the time General Jubal Early’s troops advanced on the nation’s capital, Federal reinforcements had arrived.  Because of this, the Battle of Monocacy has forever been known as “The Battle That Saved Washington.”

After visiting the battlefield, the group will enjoy lunch in downtown Frederick and then have a guided one hour tour of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.  Follow in the footsteps of soldiers and surgeons to discover the harsh conditions, personal sacrifices, and brilliant innovations of Civil War medicine, innovations that continue to save lives today.

Potluck Picnic: Wednesday, August 14

The Inter-Faith Fellowship invites you to join us for an afternoon of food, games, and fellowship. This indoor picnic will be held in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday, August 14 from 12 noon - 2:30 pm. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and beverages will be provided, please sign up to bring a favorite dish to share. Your sign up and payment of $8 per person are due no later than Sunday, August 4. This free seminar series, presented by Brooke Grove Retirement Village, offers wellness tips and tools designed to enrich and improve the lives of active 55+ adults. Lenten Bible Study starts Tuesday, March 12

The Lenten Bible study will focus on the I Am sayings of Jesus from the Gospel of John. Each I Am saying reveals more about His purpose and connects us to the God of Moses, the Great I Am. In addition to the Bible, the group will use The God We Can Know: Exploring the “I Am” Sayings of Jesus by Rob Fuquay.

The class will meet on Tuesdays at 10:30 am from March 12 - April 9 and will be co-led by Dr. Ramonia Lee and Dr. Woodie Rea.
