Strathmore Live from the Lawn: Wednesday, August 22

Join us as we venture out to see Mark G. Meadows, the debonair DC jazz musician, composer, and vocalist, who is on a mission to create a unifying sound that breaks social barriers.  Meadow's velvet voice harmonizes pop, gospel, R & B, and jazz.

All are welcome to this free concert on Wednesday, August 22 at 7:00 pm.  No tickets are required at this event sponsored by New Wave (formerly know as Those Born 1942 and After.)

Book Club: Wednesday, September 12

All are invited to a book club discussion on Wednesday, September 12 at 7:00 pm. The Light Between Oceans by Margot L. Stedman is the story of a lighthouse keeper and his wife in 1918 Australia who make one devastating choice that forever changes two worlds.  

If you would like us to order the book  at a cost of $10 for you, RSVP by August 23. Otherwise, RSVP by Monday, September 10.  The book is available on Amazon and may be available at local libraries.

Lunch and a Movie: Wednesday, October 31

On Wednesday, October 31, the Inter-Faith Fellowship will meet to go out to lunch and then to a matinee performance of the movie Indivisible. The group will gather at The Chapel at about 12 noon to car pool to lunch and the movie in Rockville or Gaithersburg. Specific time and location of the movie will be shared when the movie schedule is released. RSVP no later than October 29. Please direct any questions to Bonnie at 301-598-5312.

Indivisible is based on the extraordinary true story of Army Chaplain Darren Turner and his wife Heather. Chaplain Turner and his battalion struggle during an extended deployment. The soldiers’ long-awaited homecoming is much different than any of their families anticipated. Despite a strong, faith-filled marriage, the Turners must decide if they are willing to face one more battle, the fight to save their marriage.

Chair Yoga: New Date Tuesday, October 23

Chair yoga is an excellent alternative to traditional yoga. Instead of a mat, the participant sits in a chair or stands next to it, using the chair as support. Staying seated means that even frail seniors or those who are not flexible can safely enjoy the exercise. Yoga can help loosen painful muscles, reduce stress, improve circulation, and build strength and balance.

This class will be on Tuesday, October 23 in Fellowship Hall from 10:00 am - 11:30 am and will be led by Terrie Daniels from Brooke Grove Retirement Village. Register by October 21.

Everything You Wanted to Know about Dementia: Thursday, September 27

Terry Ullman, MSW, LCSW-C, will review various forms of dementia, including symptoms and risk factors.  Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and clarify their understanding of dementia.  RSVP by September 24.

This event, sponsored by the Brooke Grove Foundation, will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 27 in the Chapel Fellowship Hall.

T'ai Chi Basics: Wednesday, November 14

T’ai Chi is a Chinese form of martial arts that involves slow, controlled and low-impact movements that can be easy for seniors-even those with limited movement. T’ai Chi can help seniors feel steadier on their feet, improve their hand eye coordination and increase flexibility.

This class on Wednesday, November 14 at 1:00 pm will be led by Terrie Daniels, senior fitness and wellness specialist, from Brooke Grove Retirement Village. Register by completing the form below no later than Sunday, November 11.

Shakespeare in the Park: Tuesday, July 10

Brookside Gardens is hosting their annual Shakespeare in the Park event on Tuesday, July 10 from 6:30 pm - 8:45 pm.  This year's performance is A Midsummer Night's Dream.   All are invited to join New Wave  (formerly known as Born 1942 and After) for this free event.  The group will carpool, leaving The Chapel parking lot at 5:45 pm.  Bring your lawn chair or blanket.  Friends and family are invited.

Eat Well to Live Well: Wednesday, July 18

Bedford Court Independent Living is sponsoring two free workshops to learn how eating well can enhance your quality of life.  On Wednesday, July 18 at 11:00 am in The Chapel Fellowship Hall, Registered Dietitian Allison Rittenour will discuss making healthy food choices. Refreshments will be served.

On Wednesday, August 8 at 11:30 am in the dining room at Bedford Court, Allison will have a cooking demonstration and discuss food preparation and menu selections. A tapas style food spread will be served for you to enjoy.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game: Wednesday, August 1

The Inter-Faith Men invite all baseball lovers (both men and women of the Chapel) to join them for a day-game at Nationals Stadium to watch the Washington Nationals take on the New York Mets!  Tickets for this ballgame at noon on Wednesday, August 1 are $35 per person.  Friends and family are welcome to come and you are responsible for your own transportation.  Reserve your spot by submitting the form below.  Your reservation and non-refundable payment are due no later than July 20. You may pay online on the giving tab, designating baseball game or mail a check to the Chapel office.  Checks are made payable to the Inter-Faith Chapel.

Advent Bible Study starts Tuesday, November 27

You are invited to join in a study of Because of Bethlehem by Max Lucado. The group will meet on Tuesdays at 10:30 am from Tuesday, November 27 - Tuesday, December 18.

Each year, the Christmas season compels people to ask the Christmas questions. What’s the big deal about the baby in the manger? What does his birth have to do with me? Because of Bethlehem, God knows what it is like to be a human. When we talk to God about our challenges, our struggles, and our tough times, he understands, because he has been there. He’s been here.

Visit Washington National Cathedral: Thursday, December 6

We will view the collection of crèches from around the world, take a guided highlights tour, and view the skyline of DC from the 7th floor observation tower.  The Cathedral’s annual crèche exhibit features about 80 nativity scenes depicting the story of Jesus’ birth as interpreted by cultures and customs around the world, selected for display from the collection of over 800.  Donated by a former docent, the Cathedral’s collection includes miniatures, rare materials, and unusual depictions, as well as typical examples that might be found in one’s home.

The group will meet in The Chapel parking lot on Thursday, December 6 at 8:45 am to carpool and will plan on having lunch after our morning spent at the Cathedral.  There is an $8 senior entry fee.   If you attend, you are committing to a full, vigorous morning of touring and walking. We will return to Leisure World in the mid-afternoon and will need drivers to make this trip possible.  All riders will be asked to share the gas and parking cost incurred by the driver.

In Praise of Age: Sunday, June 24

Each year we observe In Praise of Age, a special Sunday service to recognize and celebrate the gifts and longevity of those in our congregation who are 90 years old or older.  We are grateful for their wisdom and faithfulness.  All are invited to join us in the Sunday morning worship services on June 24 as we honor these special people in the life of our Chapel.

Our guest preacher this year will be Rev. Dr. Delores Carpenter, retired Professor of Religious Education at Howard University and renowned global speaker.  We will have a reception at 10:15 am to honor our special attendees.

Trip to the Museum of the Bible on Saturday, May 5

All are invited to join the Born 1942 and After group on a full day trip to the new Museum of the Bible, near the National Mall.  The group will leave the Chapel parking lot at 9:15 am on Saturday, May 5 to travel to the museum via Metro.  The trip will involve extensive walking and standing.

Born 1942 and After Group: The Simon and Garfunkel Story on Friday, September 22

Movie with a Message: Hidden Figures on Monday, September 11

Join us to view Hidden Figures on Monday, September 11.   The movie features the incredible untold story of three brilliant African-American women working at NASA who served as the brains behind the launch of John Glenn into orbit and his safe return to earth.  This stunning achievement by Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson will inspire you.  The movie is rated PG and runs for 127 minutes.

This free movie will be shown in the Fellowship Hall at 1:00 pm.  Tickets are not required.

Born 1942 and After Planning Meeting Thursday, June 15

All Chapel baby boomers are invited to plan upcoming events in August, September, and October.  Do you want to have a party, go to a festival, enjoy an outdoor concert, visit a museum, or attend a sporting event?  Bring your ideas along with details such as time, place, cost, and date(s) to the meeting on Thursday, June 15 at 11:00 am in the Chapel library.

Praying in Color Starts October 2

Praying in Color introduces a new way to pray that is visual, active, playful, and meditative.  No artistic ability is required!  The group will meet on Mondays at 1:30 pm, starting on October 2 and continuing for 4 weeks.  Register by September 26 and let us know if you want to order the text for $11.00.

School Supply Drive Thursday, August 17

The Leisure World Committee for the Homeless and Working Poor is sponsoring a school supply drive to support the teachers at Georgian Forest Elementary School. When school funds are depleted, teachers often spend their own money to buy supplies for their students and classrooms.

Drop off your donations at Clubhouse 1 on Thursday, August 17 from 8:30 am - 12:00 pm.  Volunteers will be available for curbside drop off.   The school has a need for pens, pencils, three ring notebooks, notebook filler paper, markers, erasers, paper clips, glue sticks, rulers, scissors, zipper quart and gallon sized bags, paper towels, hand sanitizer, and cleaning wipes.

You may make a donation by check payable to the Inter-Faith Chapel with school supplies noted in the memo line.  All funds will be given to the school.

Movies with a Message Hacksaw Ridge Monday, June 12

This film will be shown at 1:00 pm on Monday, June 12 and  is based on the true story of a soldier who goes to war in World War II without a weapon.  Private Desmond Doss was drafted in 1942, but because of his faith, he refused to kill anyone or carry a weapon.  He spent his time at war as a medic, rescuing injured solders, at great risk of harm to himself.  Doss spent much time in prayer and reading his Bible. 

Director Mel Gibson underscored the power of prayer in Doss' success.  "This man existed, he was a man of faith and conviction, never fired a bullet and got the Medal of Honor for extraordinary feats that he could only have achieved through the power of God."

Note that this movie is rated R for graphic scenes of war violence.  Running time is 139 minutes.  All are invited to this free movie and tickets are not required.
