Spring Bible Study starts Monday, April 9

In April and May, we will gather for an exposition of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount using the text The Message of the Sermon on the Mount by John R. W. Stott and discover how this biblical text relates to life today.  The class will be taught by Chapel member Phyllis Lovett who has taught Bible classes for many years at Leisure World.  The class will meet on Mondays from April 9 - May 21 at 1:00 pm.

MLK Celebration on January 16

The Leisure World community Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, co-sponsored by The Chapel and the Leisure World Association for African American Culture will focus on the legacy of the Freedom Riders.  Freedom Riders drew national attention and helped force southern states to abide by Supreme Court rulings against segregation in public spaces.  They were ordinary people with strong moral convictions who put their lives on the line for change.

Our preacher for the service is Rev. Reginald M. Green who was a Freedom Rider.  He participated in student sit-ins, leading to time in a Mississippi jail.  Rev. Green retired after an illustrative forty year career in ministry as pastor of Walker Memorial Baptist Church. The service will be at 10:00 am, and all are invited.

Inter-Faith Film Festival on Wednesdays in January

Our annual film festival offers movies with a religious, spiritual or ethical emphasis.  Each film teaches us about ourselves and what it means to be faithful in today's world.  Join us in Fellowship Hall at 1:00 pm on Wednesdays to view the movie and engage in thoughtful discussion afterwards.  Bring your friends and neighbors.  No tickets are required for these free movies.

Wednesday, January 10All Saints is the true story of a pastor assigned to a tiny church with orders to close the church.  He must choose between this assignment or providing hope to Burmese refugees new to the community.  Rated PG, running time 1 hour and 48 minutes

Wednesday, January 17:  The Case for Christ  tells the true story of Lee Strobel, an avowed atheist and legal editor of the Chicago Tribune.  Strobel utilizes his journalistic and legal training in an effort to debunk the claims of Christianity.  Rated PG, running time 1 hour and 53 minutes

Wednesday, January 24:  In A Question of Faith, three families find themselves at a crossroads, questioning their faith and the God that guides their lives.  Rated PG, running time 1 hour and 44 minutes

Wednesday, January 31:  Back by popular demand, The Shack is based on the New York Times  best-selling novel.  The movie takes us on a father's spiritual journey after suffering a family tragedy.  Rated PG 13, running time 2 hours and 12 minutes

 

Memory Awareness Seminar: January 25

How's your memory?  Do you need a little assistance remembering names, facts and figures? If you do, come learn about the myths of our memory.  Learn three easy mnemonic techniques to improve your memory. These techniques may be used to remember lists of items such as groceries, to-do tasks, or clothes to pack for a trip

This free workshop will be held Wednesday, January 25 at 10:30 am in the fellowship hall.  It will be led by Paul Williams, a certified idea mapping trainer for over 13 years.  Complete this form to register by Sunday, January 22.

Interfaith Film Festival: Wednesday, January 25

Dream big and laugh along with good ole Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and rest of the beloved Peanuts gang in this brand-new feature from the imagination of Charles M. Schulz.  It's a hilarious and heartwarming adventure that proves every underdog has his day!

All are welcome to attend this free event on Wednesday, January 25 at 1:00 pm. Tickets and RSVPs are not required.  After the movie, we will discuss the universal themes, including compassion, honesty, and bravery.

Interfaith Film Festival: Wednesday, January 11

This year, our annual Interfaith Film Festival will showcase a unique selection of animated feature films with clear universal messages.  Each film teaches us something about ourselves, the world around us, and how we connect with each other.  We will view a different film at 1:00 pm each Wednesday in January.  These animated films are worthy of thoughtful discussion, so we invite you to stick around and share your thoughts with us. The movies are free and tickets are not required. 

Secret Life of Pets answers the question:  "What do your pets do when you're not home?"  A pampered terrier and his unruly new roommate from the pound must put aside their differences to survive being lost in New York City.  Afterwards, we will discuss the moral lessons presented in the film, including themes of friendship, acceptance of others, and forgiveness.

Lenten Bible Study starts February 20

Our Lenten study will be He Chose the Nails:  What God Did to Win Your Heart by Max Lucado. Every gift from God reveals God's love, but no gift reveals His love more than the gifts of the cross.  As we unwrap these gifts, we will pause and listen for God's voice, perhaps hearing Him whisper, I did it just for you.

Born 1942 and After: Relaxation and Refreshment on January 13

All boomers are invited to a party on Friday, January 13 at 7 pm in the fellowship hall.  We will enjoy a relaxing evening of appetizers, mixer games, desserts and coffee. Invite your friends and neighbors to come with you!

Mid-Week Lenten services on Wednesdays

Join us on Wednesday, March 8 - Wednesday, April 5 at noon for a special Living Lent series.  Our time of worship each week will include a meditative organ prelude beginning at 11:45 am, hymns, prayers, and a message to encourage you.

After each service, we will enjoy a special time of lunch and fellowship, Our Soup, Your Sandwich.  The Chapel will provide soup and a beverage, and you are encouraged to bring a sandwich.

Our first film on January 4 will be Zootopia, a 2016 Disney movie about a modern mammal metropolis.  The movie includes many moral lessons, including judgement, stereotypes, and fear of those who are different, worthy of thoughtful discussion.   Watch for parallels between discrimination in Zootopia and today's society.

Lenten Bible Study starts on March 7

This year's Lenten Bible study is Adam Hamilton's book entitled John:  The Gospel of Light and Life.  The Gospel of John is the mostly deeply spiritual of the four gospels.  We will study the many metaphors, including bread, life, light, water, and vine, to help us understand this unique and inspiring gospel.  John notes that his aim in writing is that we "may have life in His name."

The course will meet on Tuesdays from March 7 - April 4 at 10:00 am in the fellowship hall.  Please register for the class by February 28 using the form here.  You may purchase the book through Amazon, Cokesbury or Kindle.  You may also order the book through The Chapel for $15.

Christmas Outing for Born 1942 and After: December 7

On Wednesday, December 7, the "Born 1942 and After" Baby Boomer group will visit the Festival of Lights at the Mormon Temple Visitors' Center located at 990 Stoneybrook Drive in Kensington, MD.  The Temple grounds will be aglow with over 650,000 lights.  We will enjoy life sized outdoor nativity scenes, internationally themed Christmas trees, and displays of creches from around the world.  The highlight of the evening will be a free concert by Los Parranderos who will give us a taste of a Puerto Rican Christmas.  Los Parranderos is a traditional musical group that plays folk music from the countryside of Puerto Rico.  The group offers music on guitars, a tiple, a cuatro a carracho, and maracas.  The concert begins at 7:00 pm, but we do need to arrive at the Visitors' Center at 6:00 pm to pick up our free tickets.

We will meet at The Inter-Faith Chapel parking lot at 5:15 PM on Wednesday, December 7.  We will pick up our concert tickets first, then enjoy the lights, trees, and creches.  This is a free event, open to the public.  After the concert, we will gather at an area coffee shop for coffee and dessert.  If you plan on attending, please submit this form by December 6.

Walking: The Miracle Exercise on Wednesday, April 18

Did you know that walking can reduce your pain, improve your memory and help you live longer?  You don't even have to take long walks.  Lots of mini-walks throughout the day can provide the same benefit!

Terrie Daniels, senior fitness and wellness specialist at Brooke Grove Retirement Village, will present this seminar on Wednesday, April 18 from 1-2:15 pm at the Chapel.  She will provide more than 10 health benefits of walking and share enjoyable tips that will motivate you to get moving.

Pizza and Movie Night on Friday, April 20

The Born 1942 and After group invites all for pizza and a movie on Friday, April 20 at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall.  The movie for the evening will be Wonder which follows the inspiring story of the Pullman family whose youngest child is a boy born with facial differences.  The film is rated PG and runs for 113 minutes.

The cost for the dinner is $7.00 per person which includes pizza, beverages and dessert.  Sign up by submitting the form below by April 15.  The payment is non-refundable and also due by April 15.  You may pay on the Giving tab on the home page or send payment to the Chapel.

Children's Concert December 7

You are invited to join us for a concert at The Chapel by the Georgian Forest Elementary School chorus on Wednesday, December 7 at 10:30 am.  The chorus will perform holiday and jazz favorites, as a way of saying thank you.  The Leisure World community has supported the school through school supply and book donations.  The Chapel also gives socks and toys to the school at Christmas time. 

Schweinhaut Encore Chorale: Sunday, December 4

All Leisure World residents, friends, and families are invited to join us for the second concert of The Inter-Faith Concert Series on Sunday, December 4 at 3:00 pm.  The local chorale of adults over 55 years of age will perform a variety of uplifting holiday music.  A reception to meet the conductor, pianist, and chorale members will follow with light refreshments.  Admission is free, and tickets are not required.  A freewill offering to support the concert series will be taken.

Advent Bible Study starts Monday, November 28

Join us for our Advent Bible study examining key passages in the Old Testament about the Messiah and their completion in the life and saving work of Jesus.  These passages have had a profound effect on the imagination and worship of Christians for two thousand years, leading George Frederic Handel to write one of the greatest expressions of worship and adoration-his oratorio, the Messiah.  The entire text of Handel's Messiah is drawn from scripture.  This study will guide us through scripture passages used in Handel's work that highlight who Jesus is and what he came to do.

This Bible study will meet at 10:00 am  in the fellowship hall on Mondays:  November 28, December 5, December 12, and December 19.  The cost of the book is $7.00.  RSVP by submitting the form below by November 23 to register.
